Robin Dutt (Head Coach VfL Bochum 1848): Congratulations to Mersad and his colleagues on their first victory in charge, also for their deserved victory. Especially in the first half we could not implement our game plan. The plan was not to play small tiki-taka stuff today in order to advantage the opponent’s press – but that's exactly what we did. In our own half we got involved in too many unnecessary problems. We didn't manage to play straight forward in the first 45. Regensburg already had a lot of early corners, where they were always on the ball and where we were lucky that we weren't already behind. In the second half, we switched to a 4-3-3 to get more pressure and free up our forwards. Then we make another mistake, where we get involved in a pressing situation and concede. We already showed morale and put pressure to up front, with Lee on the right side we had more ball security and could bridge the gap between midfield better. But in the end it wasn't enough to build up enough pressure to equalize. The bottom line was that it was a deserved victory for Regensburg.
Mersad Selimbegovic (Head Coach SSV Jahn Regensburg): I want to express my huge respect to both teams, both teams managed to play in the adverse weather conditions. The game was as expected for me: The opponent tried to play a lot, we stuck with our plan. Thank God the plan worked out. In the first half we piled on the pressure and took the lead, we could have got another just before the break. Unfortunately, we didn't manage that. As always in games like this, the opponent finds a way back, VfL did well there. From the spot they came back into it, but overall we had the clearer goal opportunities. After the third goal at the end, we are overjoyed that we together with the fans can celebrate a good start to the season.
Anthony Losilla (Captain VfL Bochum 1848): It's frustrating. I have the feeling that we didn't give everything to get at least a point. Partly it was good, but defensively we were too weak today to get anything here. The coach prepared us all week, we talked a lot about our opponents. Nevertheless, we played exactly as Jahn wanted us to. I don't know why, but the fact is we still have a lot of work to do. We still need time, but in football we have only limited time. We have to do this quickly now and next week, in spite of our defeat, we have to start the match against Bielefeld in high spirits.
Simon Zoller (VfL Bochum 1848): The fans proved after the game that they have patience with us. Especially in the first half, we overplayed and Jahn presented us with problems with their high press. In the second half we tried to change, we got back to it. We want to do what we set out to do - but that's always easier said than done. Nevertheless, in the end we deserved to lose.
Tom Weilandt (VfL Bochum 1848): That’s not how we’d imagined today going. They ran rings around us, we have to work to change that. After all, there's another important game ahead of us against Bielefeld. Unfortunately, we couldn't work out enough clear-cut chances today, we definitely have to do better.
