VfL Bochum 1848’s winning streak has come to an end but they fought their way back into an away match which seemed already lost to register a deserved point against SSV Sandhausen. Behrens gave the hosts the lead on the halftime whistle but, with Bochum turning on the pressure, Robert Zulj equalised from a Thomas Reisfeld assist after 84 minutes to give VfL Bochum 33 points from their first 17 matches.

On the last match day of the first half of the season, VfL Bochum travelled to SV Sandhausen and head coach Thomas Reis decided to change his successful team. He rested Gerrit Holtmann to vive Miloš Pantović a starting place after convincing performances as a sub in the last two matches.

In an intensive opening spell, VfL Bochum dominated possession and won a couple of corners that unfortunately yielded nothing. In the 11 minute, Herbert Bockhorn was shown a yellow card for his first foul of the match. Five minutes on, the first good chance of the game fell to VfL Bochum with Losilla pinging a cross to Zoller whose header hit the side-netting.

Then SSV Sandhausen gained the upper hand with Keita-Ruel’s shot from the edge of the box saved by Riemann after 21 minutes. Just 60 seconds later, the ball fell to Keita-Ruel but his goal-bound shot was blocked by a defender.

In a hard-fought match, Paurevic saw a yellow card for a foul on Pantović after 41 minutes. Half a minute before half-time Žulj could only clear Halimi’s corner-kick as far as Röseler who returned the ball to Behrens. The Sandhausen attacker, who found himself unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box, headed the ball against the post and then was quickest to the rebound to squeeze the ball home. 1-0 just before the interval.

After the break, VfL Bochum took the initiative and more of the ball with head coach Thomas Reis substituting Bockhorn and Pantović with Holtmann and Ganvoula to increase the pressure after 63 minutes. Three minutes later, Soares played a through-ball to Žulj whose low shot was blocked by SVS keeper Kapino’s foot.

After 70 minutes, a loose ball came to Gamboa roughly 25 yards out who let fly but saw his ball narrowly go wide. Eight minutes later Žulj’s corner was headed on by Losilla for Bella Kotchap to try and back heel it but his effort was blocked once again. Reis now made another substitution with Eisfeld and debutant Luis Hartwig on for Tesche and Zoller after 83 minutes. It took Thomas Eisfeld a mere 30 seconds to make an impact with a precise cross from a free-kick which found Žulj who headed in from 10 yards.

Both teams were now going for the decider with Bochum losing the ball in attack in the 90 minute and inviting Sandhausen to break but fortunately Pena Zauner’s shot went wide for the game to finish in an ultimately fair 1-1 draw.

VfL Bochum now will have to try and build on this result away to in-form St Pauli on Thursday at 8:30 CET.
