Patrick Fabian will remain at VfL Bochum 1848 in the future. The Bochum "Bedrock", a member of the club since 2000, will work as an assistant to the management team for the next few years. The upcoming 2019/20 season will also be his last as a VfL professional footballer.

"I am extremely pleased that we have come to such an agreement with Patrick Fabian," says VfL Director of Football Sebastian Schindzielorz. "He will be a full member of our squad in the coming season, but will already be familiar with the main features of the future management tasks. His follow-up contract as assistant to the management team will start from the summer of 2020. We recognized this a while ago and repeatedly emphasised that we also need new structures in the field of sports in addition to the pitch. We are creating this by spreading the responsibility over more shoulders."

Patrick Fabian is one of the longest-serving German professional footballers in terms of uninterrupted time at a football club. Schindzielorz continues: "He is the identification figure of the current squad, a role model in terms of willingness and motivation for our young players. In addition, he’s also made a positive impression off the pitch as an inquisitive and committed character. I'm already looking forward to working with him."

The player himself already has concrete ideas about his new role: "I will continue to be an integral part of the squad and will continue to train normally after the summer break. I have only played for VfL in my professional career and don’t plan to change that now. This role fills me with great gratitude. We have to see what role I will play on the field. At the same time, I will try to help the club on other levels as well. It should happen primarily directly in the sporting field," says Patrick Fabian.
