The women of VfL Bochum 1848 have completed their first half of the season in the Regionalliga West - and are currently in first place! Borussia Bocholt could still challenge head coach Kyra Malinowski's team, but regardless of that, a strong half-year with numerous highlights lies behind the blue and white women.
Last weekend, VfL’s women won their first-round finale at Arminia Bielefeld 3-0. Svenja Streller, Janine Angrick and Jennifer Brinkert set the course for an away victory with their goals within eight minutes. It was the fifth league win in a row, our women again confirmed their strong run. A whopping 17:1 goals in these games, the VfL finished the last four games with a clean sheet in all of them. Outstanding, however, was the performance against the current runners-up Bayer 04 Leverkusen II. The women won 6-1 on their home LA pitch at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion.
This was by no means the only highlight of the season so far. In the DFB-Pokal, the women beat Holstein Kiel in the 1st round, and in the 2nd round the Blue and Whites were only narrowly beaten 0-1 in front of 1,500 fans. In the league, there are eight victories after 13 games, with only two defeats. In addition, there were three draws, including a spectacular 5:5 at Vorwärts Spoho Köln. Svenja Streller leads the internal scoring list with nine league goals.
Kyra Malinowski, head coach of the VfL women since summer, looks back positively on the past months: "On the whole, we are very satisfied with how the first half of the season went. Looking at the standings, we can and should be. You can also see from the table that everything has been very close so far and that you have to perform consistently. But we can't and don't want to rest on our laurels. It is a nice snapshot. But we want to keep going, keep working and keep developing. In the first half of the season, it was clear that we have moved closer together as a team, and we have taken steps forward both on and off the pitch. We want to build on that. Hopefully we can then make the second half of the season as pleasing and positive as the first half."
Managing Director Sport Patrick Fabian also has a close eye on the results: "Those were really great results from our women in the first half of the season, we can only congratulate them on that and I would like to do that on behalf of the whole VfL. I'm not only thinking of the current top position in the Regionalliga, but also of the performances in the DFB-Pokal and the second round match at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. I'm especially happy for Kyra, she can look back on a successful first half-year as head coach of our women. But of course, as always with VfL, it's a joint success of the whole team."
There is now one more league game on the agenda before the winter break. On 4 December, it's against Borussia Bocholt. Another win and the VfL women will have finally secured the autumn or winter championship. Next year, the Regionalliga will start the rest of the season at the beginning of March.
