The newly laid turf at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, which was only installed at the beginning of July, was unfortunately damaged by the heavy rainfall around 14 July. The grass has small areas of clear patches and yellowing that will also be clearly visible in the upcoming friendly match against FC Utrecht.

The peeling that happens after heavy rain, movement and laying puts the finished turf under stress, making it more susceptible to fungal infections. The heavy rain and subsequent warmth created a microclimate where the grass was exposed to high moisture for too long, providing an ideal breeding ground for fungal infection.

Countermeasures have already been taken in consultation with the manufacturer as well as the city of Bochum in order to present the turf in top shape again for the first Bundesliga home match against 1. FSV Mainz 05.
