VfL Bochum had to travel home pointless after they lost their last away match of 2019 3-1 to Greuther Fürth. Hrgota scored a brace for the “Clovers” with super-sub Leweling killing the game off in added time. Silvère Ganvoula’s goal turned out to be no more than little consolation for the team that had beaten Aue last week. In squad news, Vitaly Janelt replaced the suspended Toto Losilla.
1’ Great through ball by Decarli cleared for a corner which finds Blum who shows some nifty footwork before his cross is narrowly missed by Decarli.
11’ Close! In their first meaningful attack, Nielsen hits the post for Fürth.
15’ Dangerous attack! A long ball finds Blum, Ganvoula turns but his shot is blocked at the last second.
17’ The ball is booted forward by Mohr, Hrgota controls the ball before hitting it on the half-volley. It fortunately goes wide.
18’ Goal for the hosts! Hrgota profits from good fortune, when Riemann spills a low cross. He manages to block Hrgota’s shot from point blank range, but the ball bounces back to the Fürth player, it hits him and dribbles in.
34’ Good opportunity! Blum to Soares who drives the ball into the centre where Janelt can’t make clean contact.
37’ Our biggest chance to equalise comes when Pantovic is clean through but goalie Burchert gets his foot to the ball.
38’ Oh no! Pantovic again – our No 27 can’t steer a good cross towards a practically empty goal.
45’ A Fürth free-kick from a dangerous position, but Riemann collects Stefaniak’s effort with ease.
A good start by the Blau Weißen before the hosts took over gradually. Hrgota capitalised on a succession of mistakes in the Bochum defence to give the hosts the lead. In the final ten minutes of the first half, VfL were back in the driving seat with decent chances for Janelt and Pantovic.
45’ No substitutions at the break, the starting XI trusted to turn the match around.
59’ Well played by Blum! Decarli finds our left winger who runs with the ball and lets fly. Just wide of the right post.
68’ Thomas Reis sends on Manuel Wintzheimer for Pantovic.
70’ GOAL! Blum wins the ball in midfield and finds Ganvoula with a low cross into the middle. Our top scorer slots the ball home for the equaliser.
75’ Another substitution: Simon Zoller comes on for Chung Yong Lee.
83’ Fürth are looking for the win too! There is all to play for!
87’ Our last substitution: Tom Weilandt in place of Blum.
88’ Goal! This is so tough to take. Hrgota scores again, this time thanks to a Gamboa deflection.
92’ NOOO! Decarli is unmarked but his header floats wide! That could have been a last-minute equaliser.
93’ That’s that. With Bochum throwing everything forward, Leweling is through and takes the ball past Riemann for the 3-1.
A defeat thanks to two deflections for Hrgota’s goals, helped by lapses in our defence. Instead of equalising in the dying seconds, we concede the killer goal. A defeat that hurts, especially we could have got so much more.
Thomas Reis (head coach of VfL Bochum 1848): Congratulations to Greuther Fürth. Today we saw a game that didn’t display both sides’ best footballing qualities. It was a battle-oriented game. We knew that Fürth had a strong team and good individual players. You could see that in the first half there were a lot of transitions where we didn’t show 100% desire to get back and defend our goal. We made it too easy for our opponents to get the goals, after individual mistakes we weren’t able to clear the ball get the ball. With the second goal for them we just needed to get rid of the ball. It's annoying because we deserved to go into the half 1-0 down, but in the second half we had thought that we could make a change. Both sides fought hard, and in the end it is annoying that we have to go home pointless. I think a draw would have been the fairest result.
Stefan Leitl (head coach for SpVgg Greuther Fürth):Thank you for your kind words. The game started well for us with Havard Nielsen’s shot that hit the post, we could have taken the lead there. After that we felt on the sidelines that Bochum were playing well. We had less joy playing in midfield. Nevertheless, we got a break and took the lead. After that we moved away from our original 4-3-3. That helped us control the middle better, allowed Bochum less through balls. The 1:1 was of course an individual mistake, before it was not foreseeable that Bochum hits because we had the game under control. Then it was a great reaction of my team, which showed the unconditional will to win this game.
Manuel Riemann (VfL Bochum 1848): The fact is that we had a game today that we should have finished off and been well ahead in the first half. We have to counterattack more effectively. With the 1-0 we had some bad luck. I guessed a bit, the ball hits my thigh, because I’d gone a bit further forward than I should’ve. The opponent shoots, I make up for my mistake, but then somehow it goes in. After we made it 1-1, we have to see it out until the end and take a point home with us. But we couldn’t capitalise on good opportunities. It was actually a balanced game, I don’t believe that Fürth were two goals better than us. But that’s the second division, it’s how it goes. We couldn’t see it through. The fans are worried for their club and are not satisfied with the way we played. On the whole, I can understand and respect that. But it doesn't help if we tear pieces out of one another after every defeat. For us it will be about maintaining our league status this season and that can only be done together. Even if things don't go the way the fans want them to, we can't forget to stay as one unit. That is an absolute necessity. We have to face up to criticism, we are happy to go talk about it and face up to it. But we must not divide ourselves after every defeat. We will be okay only if we stay together.
Vitaly Janelt (VfL Bochum 1848): Today we were not consistent enough. We started brightly in the first few minutes, then Fürth gradually grew into the game more. We made a mistake that was immediately punished. For us at the moment we don’t reward ourselves enough considering the chances we make. After the break we weren’t good enough, there were many long and second balls and not enough structure. Fürth pressed hard, but we were still able to make it 1-1. But we conceded two goals in the last ten minutes, which is tough to take. Everyone knows what is possible in this league, with a victory we would have overtaken today’s opponents, but instead we’ve gone back towards the bottom. Football is an emotional game, and today we weren’t able to satisfy the fans.
Saulo Decarli (VfL Bochum 1848): It's really bloody annoying today. We wanted to win this game, and in the end it’s turned out to have left us all with a sour taste in our mouths. We have to accept that, even if it hurts. Now we have to see to it that we make it better again on Friday against Hanover. We weren’t consistent today. But we deserved at least one point today. Now we have to analyse it, go on, do better and get three points against Hannover.
