It’s going to be a stiff piece of work on Tuesday night! Although there’s a gap of two leagues between VfL and SV Elversberg, the recently promoted 3. Liga team from the Saarland has already reched some decent results this season. Here’s out LOOK AHEAD on #ELVBOC:

Things are going well for the promoted side. For the first time since 2014 SV Elversberg are back in die 3rd Bundesliga. A comeback that became apparent even long before. In the past eight years our upcoming opponent never finished the season lower than fifth place in the final table of Regionalliga Südwest. Big euphoria turned up after the long awaited promotion this summer. Elversberg managed to win 9 out of the first 12 fixtures, including an impressive 4-1 victory against strongest competitors TSV 1860 Munich. Seems like it all works out well for the Saarlanders. Most familiar player is former Braunschweig centre-back Marcel Correia, who also played for Kaiserslautern and Paderborn. He is acutally one of the rare new signings this summer. Even one league higher Elversberg’s head coach rather puts his faith into the current successful squad of the last campaign. Talking about the head coach, he’s a familiar man as well…

Horst Steffen has been in charge as a head coach for SV Elversberg for four years now. As a professional player the midfielder made 207 Bundesliga appearances for the clubs Bayer 04 Uerdingen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg. The native of Krefeld also made 10 international caps for Germany’s Under 21 national team. After his carreer as a professional player Steffen immediately started working as a head coach, and following his time at SC Kapellen-Erft he signed for his former clubs Duisburg and Gladbach, where he worked as a youth coach, before moving on to Stuttgarter Kickers‘ first team. Other jobs at clubs like Preußen Münster and Chemnitz FC followed, before Steffen joined SV Elversberg in October 2018.

Tuesday’s clash is a real debut – there has never been a fixture between VfL Bochum 1848 and SV Elversberg before. Wasn’t even possivle as the Saarland side has never played beyond the 3rd Bundesliga like they are doing currently as well as back in the 2013/14 season. Since there has never been a cup clash either, we will be travelling to the Ursapharm Arena (10,000 seats capacity) for the first game ever!

A very important victory in the 2nd round of the DFB-Pokal! VfL Bochum 1848 won 0-1 against third division leaders SV Elversberg. Captain Anthony Losilla scored the decisive goal five minutes before the final whistle in a tightly contested match!

DFB-Pokal matches are always special. In the 2nd round, VfL Bochum 1848 wanted to book their ticket to the last 16 at third division side SV Elversberg. Head coach Thomas Letsch announced at the press conference that there would be no big rotation. No sooner said than done. The only change in the team: Christopher Antwi-Adjei came in for Simon Zoller.

Here's how the game went:

1' The ball is rolling. Let's go, VfL!

1' Elversberg with the first attack of the game. But Riemann catches Fellhauer's cross safely.

4' Wild opening phase. Elversberg go for it early, we don't get any peace yet.

5' Holtmann makes a good run down the wing and brings in a sharp cross. Elversberg's keeper is alert and has the ball in front of Hofmann.

7' Dangerous shot. Gamboa saves, but it would have been offside anyway.

11' Cross from Gamboa to Holtmann. It's a pity that our winger doesn't get the ball across to Hofmann in the best possible way.

11' The hosts counterattack. Soares clears for a corner.

12' We also defend the corner kick well.

14' The Blue-Whites are looking for Hofmann with the long ball time and again. Our striker wins almost every header duel, but the ball still doesn't reach his teammate accurately enough.

15' Lucky for us. Great chance for Elversberg. Koffi just misses.

17' First shot on goal from VfL. Holtmann tries, but doesn't hit the ball well.

21' Hofmann is enormously strong in the air. He clears a sharp Elversberg free kick in his own sixteen.

25' Riemann is lying on the ground. Is treated briefly, seems to go on for our number one.

27' Holtmann goes for the second ball in the penalty area, Pinckert hits him on the foot. But referee Sven Waschitzki-Günther's whistle remains silent. There is no video evidence in the 2nd round of the DFB-Pokal yet. Bitter for us.

29' Antwi-Adjei receives the first yellow card of this match.

33' The VfL pressing is working! Everyone is running high and the first Elversberger is forced into a mistake. It didn't take much for us to score an own goal, but we get a corner.

33' Gamboa finishes after the corner kick, but it is blocked.

34' Elversberg counter-attack. A sharp cross from Koffi, Masovic stands well and clears for a corner.

37' A VfL attack through several stations. Förster plays a chip ball to Holtmann, who takes a corner.

38' Soares then has the chance to shoot from the back, but it goes well over.

38' That looked really good! Förster and Stöger combine with a double pass into the sixteen, but miss the final moment.

40' Best VfL chance! Antwi-Adjei picks up speed on the right and slams the ball against the crossbar. Not much was missing for the lead.

43' Next yellow card for the blue and white team. This time Gamboa draws a tactical foul.

44' Again Hofmann clears a free kick in his own sixteen with his head. It's great how our striker helps out defensively.

45' We counterattack well at first, but in the end Förster turns away. The last pass was missing.

45'+1 Riemann plays a long ball to Hofmann, who crosses to Holtmann. Our winger takes the shot, too central.

Half-time: The score is 0-0 going into the break. Justified by performance. We slept through the opening phase, Elversberg had the lead in the person of Koffi. Then we got into the game better, Antwi-Adjei hit the crossbar after a strong run. It could be a long evening.

46' Second half is underway. Head coach Thomas Letsch does not make any changes.

47' What a chance! The VfL lead missed by a hair. Antwi-Adjei makes a great run, moves into the sixteen and delivers a sharp cross. Elvserberg defender Pinckert almost hits his own goal, but it goes out of bounds.

50' Elversberg have also arrived in this second half. Good chance via the right side, but ultimately goes well over Riemann's box.

55' We are present in the duels. Förster snatches the ball back, is then fouled by Rochelt. Yellow card for the Elversberger.

55' Next chance for us. Free kick Stöger, header Hofmann. But there is no celebration, the ball just misses the target.

56' Strong run by Stöger, but unfortunately the pass to Antwi-Adjei doesn't arrive.

56' Lucky for us. Rochelt takes a shot, the ball bounces off the lower edge of the crossbar. It remains 0:0.

59' Elversberg score, but it was offside. Again, we are lucky.

60' It's a wild phase at the moment. We came out of the half well, but Elversberg had two huge chances to take the lead. We can be happy that the score is still 0:0.

60' Quite a wild phase at the moment. We came out of the half well, but Elversberg had two huge chances to take the lead. We can be happy that it's still 0:0.

64' First change for us. Heintz comes on for Gamboa.

64' We change to a three-man defence. Soares and Antwi-Adjei are on the wing.

64' This can't be true... Ordets has a free shot after a corner, but it's too central. Biggest chance of the game.

68' We make a double change. Osterhage replaces Förster, Osei-Tutu comes in for Antwi-Adjei.

76' The crowd is announced. 6911 fans are present for this cup evening. Among them about 800 Bochum fans, who provide a good atmosphere!

77' Janko comes on for Holtmann. Our fourth change.

80' Ordets puts Riemann in trouble. He's taken down. No yellow card? Quite questionable.

85' TOOOOOOR! Toto does it! We lead 1:0! Osei-Tutu crosses, Hofmann extends and our captain pokes the ball over the line. Simply great!

87' The goal feels so good. A liberating strike! Nice bunch of cheering that has formed after Toto's goal.

89' Important save by Osterhage in the sixteen.

90' Four minutes added on top.

90'+2 You can hardly see anything in this fog. The home fans demand a penalty. But it is not given. Riemann grabs the last balls.

90'+3 We are in front of the box again. Kristof grabs the ball in front of Hofmann.

Full-time: The game is over! We are in the last 16! Toto takes us into the next round. Big compliments to the home side. We are simply overjoyed today to have cleared this hurdle!

The Bundesliga continues on Sunday. Then the league leaders, 1. FC Union Berlin, come to the Vonovia Ruhrstadion (Sunday, 23 October, 15:30).
