Only three remaining fixtures in 2022, the next one sees VfL playing away in Dortmund – wallowing in great memories of our last visit in the neighbouring city. Here’s this week’s LOOK AHEAD on #BVBBOC:
Most probably Europe’s current best striker, Erling Haaland, left BVB this summer. Sebastian Haller was supposed to replace the Norwegian, but the former Frankfurt player developed cancer so that he has not been able to play for his new club for the time being. Meanwhile the forward could re-join the training sessions. VfL wish all the best for the next steps. So Borussia were forced change their plans while it was already mid of July. Anthony Modeste signed from FC Cologne, but he has not been able to reach his former strike rate yet. That is why top young talent Youssoufa Moukoko found himself in the starting line-up in the past weeks. Further new signings are Karim Adeyemi (forward), Salih Özcan (midfielder) as well as German internationals Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck (both centre backs). Considerable players who are expected to chase for the series champions Bayern Munich. Currently the eight times German champion is struggling with significant injury concerns. But head coach Edin Terzic hopes for some keyplayers to return before our match in the neighbouring city, like regular goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Mats Hummels, skipper Marco Reus and left-back Raphael Guerreiro.
THE HEAD COACH
Actually Terzic is very familiar with the city of Bochum. The 40-year-old studied the subject of sports at the Ruhr-Universität and played for SG Wattenscheid 09 in the 2006/07 season. He started his carreer at BVB at the beginning of the 2010s years as a scout and assistant coach for the Under 19 squad. After that Terzic worked as an assistant coach for Slaven Bilic at Turkish club Besiktas Istanbul as well as West Ham United in London/England. In 2018 the native of Menden returned to the Ruhr area. When Lucien Favre was sacked as BVB head coach Terzic took over and won the DFB Cup the following summer. Later he quit the head coach position to become a technical director. But after Dortmund and ex head coach went separate ways after only one year Terzic made his comeback. His team won seven out of the first twelve Bundesliga fixtures, still competing in the Champions League and the DFB Cup.
Time for another Bundesliga Ruhr derby. Two times falling over and you‘re already in the city of Dortmund. That’s Tomas Letsch’s impression of the situation before his first ever derby as VfL head coach. But he surely knows how VfL’s last performance in the Westfalenstadion looked like. After spectacular 90 minutes the score was Dortmund 3, Bochum 4 – VfL managed to stay up in Dortmund of all cities. A big party in the blue and white colours. Pictures that are going to remain in our memories for a long time. The first leg game at Castroper Street ended in a 1-1 draw. That’s four strong points scored by the lads. The record sees 62 Bundesliga clashes in total so far, 17 victories for VfL, 24 for BVB.
VfL Bochum 1848 were unable to improve their away record in the neighbouring city of Dortmund where two early goals put the Blue and Whites on the losing track in Dortmund. Shortly before the break, BVB youngster Moukoko scored again. Thomas Letsch's team still had their chances, but could not put the ball into the BVB goal.
Saturday afternoon, Ruhr derby. VfL Bochum 1848 travelled to Borussia Dortmund on the 13th Bundesliga matchday. Good memories came to mind when looking back on the 4-3 victory which sealed our staying up in April. Head coach Thomas Letsch changed his starting eleven in three positions. Vasilios Lampropoulos moved into central defence for the injured Dominique Heintz. Konstantinos Stafylidis and Simon Zoller also started. Christopher Antwi-Adjei and Philipp Förster were initially on the bench.
Here's how the game went
1' The ball is rolling. Let's go, VfL!
2' We are in possession of the ball and start the first attack. That looks pretty good already, keep it up.
3' Osei-Tutu steals the ball, stopping a Dortmund attack.
3' Stöger also wins the ball against Bellingham, initiates the next offensive action. We take on the duels - that will be decisive today.
4' Ordets with the first foul, free kick for Dortmund.
5' We clear the free-kick well, no danger.
8' 1-0 to Dortmund. Moukoko has some space and takes a shot. The ball lands in the net.
11' Penalty for BVB.
12' The penalty goes in. Reyna scores to make it 2-0 to Dortmund.
14' It's important not to hang our heads now. Osei-Tutu and Stöger each play a lo17' Free kick to Dortmund. We defend it well, there is no danger.
21' We seem to be coping reasonably well with the early double blow. We definitely take on the duels. Emblematic: the good tackle by Stafylidis just now.
24' Osei-Tutu wins our first corner against Reyna.
25' What a chance. This can't be true. Dortmund don't get the corner cleared, Zoller goes for a bicycle kick. Unfortunately, it goes narrowly over. Keep it up, lads!
27' Hofmann makes it 2-1! What a beautiful goal! Outstanding cross from Soares, Hofmann receives the ball superbly and converts artistically.
27' False alarm. The video assistant intervenes. Unfortunately, Hofmann was just offside. Very bitter, would have been so important.
30' After a Dortmund free kick, we start a counter-attack. Riemann hits the ball long to Osei-Tutu, but unfortunately Hummels is there.
34' Dangerous attack by BVB, Soares clears for a corner.w pass into Dortmund's penalty area, but unfortunately there is no taker.
39' Big chance for Dortmund. We were lucky. But the goal wouldn't have counted anyway, it was offside.
41' Next good corner from us, again the ball almost ends up in the net! But we win another corner kick, now from the other side.
42' Referee Tobias Stieler points to the spot again. Soares allegedly fouled Reyna.
44' This time the video assistant takes our side and intervenes. Stieler looks at it himself and takes back the penalty.
45+2' 3-0 to BVB. Riemann was too far out of his goal, Moukoko sees this and lifts the thing into the net. How bitter, so close before the break.
Half-time break: 3-0 lead for Dortmund. Extremely bitter in the making. After conceding two early goals, we got into the game better and were unlucky with Hofmann's offside goal. The third goal was simply unnecessary. The game seems to be over, let's hope for the best in the second half.
46' Match goes on. No changes on either side.
47' Great attack from us. Stöger plays a deep pass through Dortmund's defence. Osei-Tutu goes past Schlotterbeck and shoots. BVB keeper Kobel gets a hand to it, and the ball hits the far post... we haven't been blessed with luck so far.
51' We've just got a foothold in Dortmund's half. The next corner within a few minutes.
54' First yellow card of the game. Goes to Gamboa.
56' Brandt's free kick whizzes past the Bochum goal.
58' Lucky us. Moukoko almost with the fourth.
64' It just wasn't meant to be. Hofmann almost has a great chance, but Kobel challenges him at the last moment. The ball goes out.
68' Dortmund make three substitutions. There is still no impulse from the bench.
69' Good central free kick position for Stöger.
70' Unfortunately, nothing comes of it.
71' Now we make three changes. Holtmann, Ganvoula and Antwi-Adjei come in. Osei-Tutu, Zoller and Hofmann go off.
77' Next substitution for us. Osterhage comes on for Stafylidis.
78' Yellow card for Dortmund's Özcan after a tactical foul on Stöger.
79' Ganvoula shoots. We continue trying everything to score at least the one goal.
83' The game is decided, no question. Nevertheless, it's good that we don't give up here.
87´ Noch ein letzter Wechsel bei uns. Philipp Förster kommt für die Schlussminuten, Stögi geht.
90' Three minutes of injury time are indicated.
90'+2 Ganvoula tries again. Well over.
Final whistle: That's it in Dortmund. The home side will be satisfied with an efficient first half display, in which we had a big hand in conceding the goals.
Three days to recover, then it's back to business. For the last home game of the year, we welcome Borussia Mönchengladbach "anne Castroper" (Tuesday, 8 November, 8:30 pm).
VfL Bochum 1848: Riemann – Soares, Gamboa, Ordets, Lampropoulos, Losilla, Stafylidis (77. Osterhage), Stöger (87. Förster), Osei-Tutu (71. Antwi-Adjei), Hofmann (71. Ganvoula), Zoller (71. Holtmann)
Goals: 1-0 Moukoko (8.), 2-0 Reyna (12., Foulelfmeter), 3-0 Moukoko (45.+2)
Thomas Letsch (Head Coach VfL Bochum 1848): Congratulations to Edin Terzić and Borussia Dortmund on the 3-0 win. It's difficult to summarise. It always sounds strange when you sit here and say that you played a decent game. For long stretches, however, we kept the game even and did a good job of implementing the things we set out to do. But the crux of football is the goals. We lacked luck up front, and defensively we made glaring mistakes as a team. The manner was absolutely fine today. We were much more compact and courageous than in the past away games.
Edin Terzić (head coach Borussia Dortmund): Thank you for the congratulations. We really wanted to win the last home game of this calendar year today. We had a good tempo from the start and rewarded ourselves with the first opportunities early on. After that, we resolved not to let up. Unfortunately, we didn't succeed. Nevertheless, it was an important home win for us today. We succeeded, we are very satisfied.
Kevin Stöger: I didn't expect the game to go like that. We started the game well and were extremely hot. But we didn't fight well enough in the duels, that shouldn't happen. The goal for 0:3 broke our neck a little bit. We have to put the game behind us and play differently at home on Tuesday. There's a different atmosphere in home games, we're more aggressive and more aggressive. Away from home, we feel like we fall apart after conceding a goal.
Christopher Antwi-Adjei: I don't think it was necessary for us to lose like that. We played a decent game. When we conceded three goals in the first half, we helped Dortmund. Dortmund was very effective and we don't have luck on our side at the moment. It was a step in the right direction, we played more and had some control against a strong opponent. But we must not give the game away so early.
