The league leaders are visiting Castroper Street. Nothing unusual at first sight. But the situation that it’s actually 1 FC Union Berlin is quite unsually in German Football. Here’s our LOOK AHEAD on the “Irons“.

THE TEAM

The “Irons“ remain true to their principles not to sign any experienced stars, but rather developable players or any players who have been waiting for their breakthrough in the Bundesliga. Oliver Ruhnert has established his reputation by several successful transfers, the manager of the club from the district of Köpenick signed some quality players this summer – and some of them immediately became keyplayers, like Jordan Siebatcheu, who replaced former top scorer Taiwo Awoniyi. Or Portuguese Diogo Leite, who is now a first-team regular in Union’s strong defence. Not to forget ex-VfL player Janik Haberer, who even managed to score in recent fixtures. Another former Bochum lad, Milos Pantovic, is still waiting for more appearances. Despite some keyplayers like Awoniyi or Andreas Luthe and Grischa Prömel have left the club the team of head coach Urs Fischer has been playing a remarkable Bundesliga season so far.

THE HEAD COACH

Talking about Urs Fischer. The head coach has just extended his contract with Union – quite unusual in the managing business thesedays. The Swiss took over at 1 FC Union Berlin on 1st July 2018. Which makes him the second longest reigning head coach in the Bundesliga after Freiburg’s head coach Christian Streich. After they gained promotion in 2019 the 56-year-old formed the “Irons“ more and more into a team that is also able to compete in international football. After seventh and fifth place in the previous years now Union climbed on top of the table – almost like a football fairy tale. “Awesome! Awesome! What can I say?“, commented Fischer on his emotions after the last win.

THE RECORD

There have been 23 fixtures between both sides so far. The balance is in favour of Union Berlin, who won 13 times while VfL have recorded seven victories. Three matches were drawn. A nice memory for all Bochum fans is VfL’s first ever home match against Union: On matchday 33 in the 2001/02 season Delron Buckley put the lads in front at an early stage before the visitors managed to eaqualise, but Frank Fahrenhorst got the winner in the 88th minute and made all supporters go crazy. An extremely important victory that paved the way for the following promotion. Last season Union were able to win both fixtures: 1-0 away in Bochum and 3-2 at home in the “An der Alten Försterei“ stadium.

What a Sunday afternoon "anne Castroper"! VfL secured three points against league leaders Union Berlin with a magnificent performance. Commitment, passion, goals. Hofmann and Holtmann from a great move set the course for victory. Pantovic's goal came too late. Three enormously important points!

Bottom of the table against top of the table. The situation before VfL Bochum 1848's Bundesliga home match against 1. FC Union Berlin was clear. The visitors were the clear favourites. But anything is possible "anne Castroper", as our boys showed in the 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Compared to the 1-0 win in the cup in Elversberg, head coach Thomas Letsch made only one change. Jordi Osei-Tutu came in for Gerrit Holtmann.

This is how the game went:

1' The ball is rolling. Let's go, VfL!

1' The atmosphere feels better than it has in a long time. What you have been doing right from the start is outstanding, VfL fans!

3' Long ball to Antwi-Adjei. Our winger outsprints Union's Jaeckel, but keeper Rönnow joins in.

5' Really good attack from us! Stayed patient, didn't finish too hastily. Antwi-Adjei finds Osei-Tutu, who takes the first corner of the game.

5' Stöger puts the ball in after a short corner kick, Union keeper Rönnow is there.

8' The visitors' first attempted advance, but Soares slides in and clears the ball!

11' Soares again clears a diagonal ball from Union. Great, Danilo!

14' Good chance for VfL! Hofmann passes to Förster, the ball is blocked, but Antwi-Adjei sees Förster, who is still available. Our number 10 shoots, wins a corner.

14' Ordets collides with Antwi-Adjei in an aerial duel. Short treatment break,  our number 20 can continue.

17' First yellow card of the game goes to Ordets after a foul on Haberer.

18' Trimmel's free kick goes over the sideline, no danger.

20' Union have to change due to injury. Haberer cannot continue, Pantovic replaces him. One ex-Bochum player for another ex-Bochum player.

24' The atmosphere is still outstanding. The VfL fans are pushing the team forward!

25' Hofmann is a monster in the air. Wins a lot of duels.

27' Next chance for us. After a Gamboa cross, the strong Hofmann wins an aerial duel, but unfortunately places the ball a bit too centrally.

31' There is little flow to the game. There are a lot of niggly incidents that referee Dennis Aytekin sanctions.

33' Sharp cross from Trimmel. Riemann has the ball safely!

35' Union now also have a yellow card. Jaeckel trips Osei-Tutu - correct decision.

37' That was dangerous. The visitors take a short corner, Siebatcheu can shoot relatively freely. Riemann is alert and catches the ball.

39' Good run by Osei-Tutu, who unfortunately stumbles in the penalty area. Otherwise he would have been in a good position to shoot.

41' It's incredible how we're pushing Union into their own half in these minutes. Gamboa finally looks for Antwi-Adjei with a cross, who unfortunately can't get his head to the ball.

43' Biggest chance of the game! Lovely dribbling by Osei-Tutu, who shoots from 20 metres. Union keeper Rönnow gets his fingertips to it for a corner.

44' GOOOOOOAL for VfL!  Hofmann has scored! A copy of his 1-0 against Frankfurt. Corner Förster, header Hofmann - goal. Great!

45'+1 Another corner for Union. Riemann punches the ball clear, Aytekin blows his whistle!

Half-time: We go into the break with a 1-0 lead! And against the league leaders, that's something to be proud of. It's well deserved, if you look at the number of chances. Union had a hard time because we were very aggressive and put them under pressure early on. Keep it up, boys!

46' The second half is underway. No changes on either side.

48' We pick up where we left off. Osei-Tutu picks up the pace and takes a shot, but unfortunately it goes over.

49' Great game by Osei-Tutu! Our number 18 challenges Rönnow, who can only boot the ball over the sideline.

51' It's crazy how Osei-Tutu is performing here today. Not only offensively, but also defensively he gives everything for the team. He has just prevented a Union counterattack.

53' Two Berlin corners in a row, twice Riemann punches the ball out.

59' We still don't let Union get into the game, keep up the tempo, really good.

61' Bochum know that Pantovic has a sensitive foot. Dangerous finish from him, just past the far post.

62' Osei-Tutu hits the bar. Almost the 2-0 lead. Unlucky, keep it up!

65' Double substitution for us. The strong Hofmann and Osei-Tutu come off. Ganvoula and Hofmann are new in the game.

67' Holtmann's first action is a finish after a corner. But it was hard to take, he doesn't hit Union's goal.

70' Holtmann has got into the game very well. He steals the ball from Ryerson, who subsequently pulls his jersey - yellow card for the Berliner.

71' GOOOOOAL for VfL!  Holtmann scores his first goal of the season! And how beautiful was that? Great link-up play, falls into the category of dream goal. Förster, Ganvoula and Stöger combine through the midfield, and then the pass goes out to Antwi-Adjei, who tees up for Holtmann perfectly at the far post. 2-0 for us!

77' Amazement at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. There is a penalty for Union and everyone wonders why. Masovic lightly touched Behrens after a corner, video assistant Markus Schmidt intervenes and gives Aytekin a signal. He looks at the scene himself and decides on a penalty kick.

77' Rieeeeeeemann!!!! Our number one saves Pantovic's penalty! It remains 2-0!

78' Union's Starke sees yellow after a hard foul on Förster.

79' Double substitution for VfL. Stafylidis and Osterhage come onto the field for Antwi-Adjei and Förster.

80' The crowd is 25,460 fans at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. Thanks for coming!

85' Keep Union well away from our goal, keep it up!

87' Oermann comes on for the final minutes, Gamboa is off.

90' Four minutes on top.

90'+1 Ganvoula is very strong, wins a one-on-one. Rönnow makes the save!

90'+3 Pantovic scores after all. After a corner, the ex-Bochum player volleys the ball into the net. Only 2-1 now.

90'+4 Another ball into the Bochum penalty box, but Ordets blocks with his body! Final whistle!

Full-time: YEEEEESSSSSSS! Home victory! We've done everything we can to keep the points at the Castroper and beat the league leaders from the capital!
