Home debut for VfL’s new head coach Thomas Letsch – and the upcoming opponent is a real puzzler. The reigning Europa League champions from Hesse will be visiting Castroper Street. Here’s this week’s LOOK AHEAD on Eintracht Frankfurt:

With the Europa League win in their backs Eintrach have had a much better start into the season compared to last year. Except for the first matchday when they kicked off the 2022/23 season against FC Bayern and suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat. That’s life, we know what we’re talking about. But the side from Hesse soon got back on track, are currently ranking sixth in the table only three points behind league leaders Union Berlin. Logically, after their remarkable and successful season various rumours turned up this summer concerning changes in the squad. But actally, no key players except Filip Kostic, who signed for Juventus Turin, left the club. Kevin Trapp, Daichi Kamada, Evan Ndicka, Djibril Sow – all of them stayed in Frankfurt. Eintracht were even able to sign further considerable players like Mario Götze, who returned to play Bundesliga football after his time in the Netherlands. A spectacular transfer was also Randal Kolo Muani, who is suspended and will miss the next.

Oliver Glasner took over as Eintracht Frankfurt’s new head coach in July 2021. In a minimum of time he achieved great success. By a 5-4 victory on penalties over Glasgow Rangers he won the Europa League this May. “That’s the biggest moment in the club history“, said president Peter Fischer after the final whistle. After two years with VfL Wolfsburg, crowned by the qualification fort he UEFA Champions League, the Austrian joined Frankfurt in summer 2021. Previously the 47-year-old worked for several clubs in his home country – amongst others as a sports coordinator and assistant coach at RB Salzburg or as a head coach for LASK, where he managed to become First Division Champions in 2017.

There have been 69 clashes between Bochum and Frankfurt so far – by far most of them took place in the Bundesliga. Looking at the record there is no big winner as it is almost evenly balanced. VfL won 25 matches, while Eintracht managed to rack up 29 victories, 15 fixtures ended in a draw. Some lads in blue and white might remember the home match back in October 1983, when VfL showed a stunning performance and walked over the Hesse side 4-1.

What a Saturday afternoon at the Castroper Strasse! VfL Bochum 1848 finally celebrated their long-awaited first win of the season. Philipp Hofmann and Philipp Förster scored in the 3-0 win over Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt, and the visitors also scored an own goal. Three points that really do us good!

9th Bundesliga matchday of the 2022/23 season, and VfL Bochum 1848 welcomed the reigning Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt. Special about it: It was the first home game at the Castroper for new VfL head coach Thomas Letsch. Compared to the 4-0 defeat in Leipzig, the coach made three changes. Hofmann started as striker, Förster moved to attacking midfield and Mašović into central defence. Oermann and Goralski remained on the bench for the time being with Horn not available.

This is how the game went:

1' The ball is rolling. Let's go, VfL!

2' Holtmann works defensively, wins the duel. Toto to Hofmann, who is pulled down. Free kick. We show our presence!

3' Frankfurt push forward - cross byLindström to the far post, Gamboa clears for a corner.

4' Ebimbe shoots from a corner from outside the box, but we block the ball well.

7' Dangerous. Lindström shoots from distance, misses narrowly.

9' Here we are! First really strong attack by VfL Bochum and it's almost in. Zoller with a weighted cross to Hofmann, who unfortunately can't get to the ball before Trapp. Förster then tries a follow-up shot, but misses. But this is encouraging!

15' The game has calmed down a bit. A lot is happening in midfield.

17' Hofmann does a great job stealing the ball from Frankfurt's Pelligrini. Spots Zoller, who unfortunately finishes too hastily. More would have been possible.

20' Really good one-two by Holtmann and Hofmann down the left wing. Zolli and Osterhage are waiting in the centre, but Holtmann miscues the cross.

23' First save by Riemann in this game! Alario's shot is no problem for our number one.

29' Good free kick by Förster from midfield, Eintracht clears for a corner.

29' And it's really dangerous! Förster takes a great corner kick, Hofmann just misses the ball.

31' Alario plays a through ball to Lindström, who tries to break through. However, Ordets runs the Frankfurt player off with aplomb!

34' We don't let Eintracht get into the game, the Blue-and-Whites show determination in the duels. Just now Hofmann rode the challenge and was knocked down by Ndicka.

40' Zolli receives the first yellow card of the match.

43' Trapp mishits a clearanc and gifts us a corner.

44' What a shame... Holtmann almost has a free shot, but doesn't get enough power behind it. Trapp makes an easy save.

Half-time: Goalless at the break. A fair draw. Both teams have had one shot on goal. We also had a good chance by Förster after Hofmann had just missed. Mentality, passion - everything is there at VfL. We are present in the duels and hardly give the visitors any spaces. Keep it up, lads!

46' The second half is underway. No change for us. Frankfurt bring on Chandler for Jakic.

47' Fifth corner of the game for us. Gamboa takes a shot from the back, but it goes over Trapp's goal.

53' Too bad. The VfL lead would have been possible by now. Holtmann breaks through into the box, but doesn't get the final pass to his teammate.

53' Eintracht on the counterattack, Riemann is involved and clears the ball well. Strong!

54' Next yellow card goes to Ordets after an alleged foul.

55' Götze's shot, not without danger, but not on goal.

57' First yellow card for Eintracht, completely justified. Ebimbe mows down Osterhage. The best news: our number six can continue to play.

60' First change for us. Stafylidis makes his comeback after injury. Welcome back, Stafy! Osterhage comes off.

63' Lucky for us - Borre hits the post.

64' A cross from Förster is deflected and ends up in the arms of Trapp.

65' Next opportunity. Hofmann can't control the ball, otherwise he would have had a clear shot.

68' Something is possible today. Ebimbe with a poor touch presents us with a corner. Eintracht don't look solid defensively.

68' Gamboa makes a great clearance. Our right-back stops the visitors' counterattack.

71' GOOOOOOOOAL for VfL! Hofmann does it! And so deserved! Great corner from Förster, Hofmann loses his marker and heads the ball into the net. 1-0 for VfL!

72' Zolli comes off and is cheered by the fans. Antwi-Adjei comes on for him.

74' Holtmann has the 2-0 on his foot, but can't get over the ball.

80' Substitute Kamada scores, but luckily not the equaliser. The Japanese player was offside.

82' Double substitution for us. Ganvoula and Osei-Tutu come on, scorer Hofmann and Holtmann go off.

87' GOOOOOOOAL for VfL! Wonderful free kick by Förster, Ordets is there, but the ball probably bounces into the net off a Frankfurt defender's leg. We don't care! We lead 2-0!

90' Four minutes added.

90+1’ GOOOOOOOOOOAL! Crazy! Förster puts the ball right into the top corner, that's the decision!

90+3' We're still playing here. Jordi with the next attempt. Trapp catches it. The match is virtually over here.

Final whistle: Pure relief! We get our first win of the season! A juicy 3:0 against Eintracht!
