VfL Bochum 1848 suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in the first Bundesliga match of the 2022/23 season. The Blue and Whites got off to a better start against Mainz 05 and had great chances to take the lead through Stöger and Holtmann. However, the visitors' attacker Onisiwo scored with his head. Stöger equalized with a Sunday shot, 1:1 at the break. The game remained contested and balanced, but the 05ers had the better end. Again Onisiwo, again with the head. The decisive goal.

Thomas Reis (Head Coach VfL Bochum 1848): Congratulations to Bo Svensson and his team. We came into the game very well, pressed well and put the opponent under pressure. After conceding a goal, we became a bit careless and were lucky not to concede a second. Then we came back with Stögi's effort. In the second half, we had more possession, but few big chances and sometimes the last bit was missing. Of course, I'm furious that we lost by a set playl. We'll talk about that. Nevertheless: the team invested everything and it goes on and on. A point would have been deserved.
Bo Svensson (Head Coach 1. FSV Mainz 05): It was the expected difficult game in Bochum. Bochum started better and was clearly superior in the first 20 minutes. The goal gave us confidence, and after that we were the better team. In the end, a draw would have been fair. But of course we're happy to have taken three points.
Gerrit Holtmann: It's frustrating. We had a lot, a lot of possession. That wasn't bad from our side, but it wasn't good either. The two goals we conceded came out of nowhere. It was a game that should have ended in a draw. But we played too much crosswise and didn't find any solutions in depth. We have to work on that, a very difficult game awaits us in Hoffenheim.
Anthony Losilla: It's difficult to find words for that. We dominated the game for long stretches and created many good situations. We didn't allow much. The goals we conceded came from a standard and a cross. It's annoying, we still have work to do. Nevertheless, I'm positive that we'll do better next week. Hoffenheim will be a completely different game for us, we'll probably have little possession and be dangerous on the counterattack.
