SEASON04.02.2010 - 15:54
The motto of today’s press conference ahead of the match against front- runners Bayer 04 Leverkusen could have been ‘exceptional opponents require exceptional arrangements’. The talks between the media representatives and Ansgar Schwenken, member of the VfL board of directors, head coach Heiko Herrlich as well as Slawo Freier took place at an exceptional venue, the restaurant ”Palmengarten” (palm garden).
The owner of the recently opened restaurant at the Herner Straße is the sanitary company Hasenkamp, a Bochum based company rich in tradition which “has been remaining loyal to VfL Bochum 1848 for more than four decades”, Heinz Hasenkamp, its proprietor, underlined in his welcoming speech. Ansgar Schwenken, member of the VfL board of management, emphasised that the master craftsman business has been showing this loyalty by being a VfL Top Partner for more than one decade. “A commitment that is anything but self-evident,” Schwenken said. Hasenkamp GmbH will be Saturday’s Sponsor of the Day organising a bathtub race during the half-time interval as well as other activities.
However, not only the supporting programme promises to be entertaining but also the happenings on the field of play since VfL Bochum will welcome the still unbeaten side from Leverkusen. “Leverkusen have the chance to win the championship this season. It is a very young team playing fast-paced attacking football. Sami Hyypiä is a great asset to the club as his ambitious way of play boosts the quality of Leverkusen’s defense too,” Heiko Herrlich stated. “If they are able to maintain their current level, they can become German Champions.”
So far, the pacemakers have achieved twelve victories and eight draws. Therefore, Herrlich believes his men have the chance to hold Bayer Leverkusen to a draw on Saturday. “We will have to be 100 percent focused to make this happen.” In contradiction to the matches against Schalke and Bayern, Herrlich does not want his team to make any presents on Saturday. “Nevertheless, to be successful against Leverkusen, Heynckes’ side must not be in top form on Saturday.”
Practically every player is available for selection. However, since Diego Klimowicz was not able to join the training regularly over the last two months, an appearance would be too early for him. Milos Maric, who has played the full 90 minutes in all three matches this year, will only return to training on Friday as he is plagued with ankle joint problems. Kevin Vogt and Philipp Bönig will have to get some playing time under their belts before making a first team appearance. Nonetheless, Herrlich praised Bönig’s performance in last weekend’s encounter between VfL II and Preußen Münster. Anthar Yahia, on the other hand has returned from Africa and is "fit and raring to go on Saturday".
For the match against the league leaders from Leverkusen, 16,000 tickets have been sold up to now.

VfL Bochum 1848 have continued their successful away streak in their match against Hertha BSC Berlin chalking up the fifth successive away match without defeat.
