Egypt came into the game eager for revenge after having been beaten by Algeria in a one- off World Cup qualification play- off in November. The Pharaohs kept alive their hopes of winning a third straight African Nations Cup title with a 4- 0 (0- 1) semi- final victory over rivals Algeria, who had three players sent off in the match. VfL defender Anthar Yahia went the full distance.
It was an action-packed game which served to stoke the flames of an already heated rivalry between the two sides that was clearly visible throughout the match. Egypt opened the scoring from the penalty spot through Hosny Abd Rabou after Rafik Halliche was cautioned for a foul on Emad Motaeb that handed the defender his second yellow card.
Mohamed Zidan (Borussia Dortmund) doubled the lead in the second half before Algeria's misery was exacerbated when Nadir Belhadj received a straight red-card for an unpleasantly harsh tackle on Ahmed Al-Muhammadi.
Sub Mohamed Abdel-Shafy netted the third goal shortly after coming off the bench before Algeria’s shot-stopper Fawzi Chaouchi became the third player to be sent off for a wild swing at Mohamed Nagy Gedo.
Gedo completed the scoring in injury time with his fourth goal in the Cup as he buried the ball in the net handing Algeria a 0-4 defeat.
